“Little Wing,” as Damascus second graders call him, hatched at my place on March 11. His chrysalis, near my thumb, had been “home” for six months.

“Little Wing,” is a tiny (male) Black Swallowtail who loves to climb on fingers and children’s sweaters.  In late September, I rescued his caterpillar from a parking lot, and kept his chrysalis in a cool room—which wasn’t cool enough.
Next week we’ll drive to Virginia, where Charlottesville’s red clover and other nectar plants will be popping up.
