Sullivan West softball suffers tough loss

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — The Lady Bulldogs of Sullivan West were saved by the “mercy rule” in the fifth frame on May 11 as the visiting S.S. Seward Lady Spartans defeated the home team 14-2 on the Lauren Hughson Athletic Field.

From the perspective of a local sports scribbler, the only bright spot during the afternoon was watching the team’s 10-year-old elementary school co-managers help the varsity players warm up before the game, and during the contest they kept the bats and helmets in order.

Allie Hellerer is a fifth-grade Little Leaguer, who hopes that a few seasons in the future she’ll play varsity softball at the “Home of the Bulldogs.”

“I like helping the team, because I can hang out with the varsity girls,” she said. “It’s good to win and have fun.”

Joining her in managing the team is fourth-grader Kenzie Knapp, who plays travel ball when not attending classes.

Donald Lewis, Seward’s coach, is coming off an 18-1 record last season in a year that saw the Lady Spartans make it to the states, only to fall in the first round in the bottom of the eighth against Green.

Asked about goals for this year, he replied, “Same as always: go as far as we can… we have some good teams in Section IX, so it’s always a battle.”

Seward (11-2) fields five seniors: pitcher Kailey Stolowski and catcher Kaitlin Stolowski, twin sisters and captains; Hailey Carmack; Camila Fuentes and Raquel Hamling.

Lady Bulldogs (5-7) helmsman Anthony “Snake” Durkin said, “We’ve been playing really well the last couple of weeks,” before noting that the game against Seward “was subpar for us.” But “the only game that counts for us right now is Burke on Monday [May 15],” as it is Sullivan West’s last chance to earn a berth in the sectionals.
