Sullivan County honors valedictorians for 2022

MONTICELLO, NY — The Sullivan County Legislature held a special meeting on May 19 to honor the county’s valedictorians for the 2022 graduating class. Eight districts participated in the ceremony; Rebecca Stickle, the valedictorian for the Roscoe Central School District, could not attend.

This was the first event of the year’s graduation events, said district superintendent Dr. Robert Dufour. “We thank you all for taking the time to honor our students.”

Eldred Central School District

Kaitlyn Potter was announced as the valedictorian for Eldred Central School District. Potter is an accomplished scholar, said high school principal Traci Ferreira—“she takes AP classes, SUNY Sullivan classes, anything we threw at her, she took it”—and served as class officer in  grades 9 through 12, along with holding a number of other positions. Potter has an academic scholarship at Elmira College, where she will play on the women’s wrestling team and pursue a criminal justice major.

Fallsburg Central School District

Nabiha Shah Jahan was announced as Fallsburg Central School District’s valedictorian. High school principal Kyle Roddey introduced her as an honors student, as an engaged member of the Interact Club and as a student who learned English as a second language while she accomplished the rest of her education. Jahan intends to follow her passion of math into a career as an accountant, said Roddey. “She’s taken every business class that Fallsburg offers, which is something that not many students do.”

Liberty Central School District

Katrina Blais was announced as the valedictorian for Liberty Central School District. “Katrina displays all of the best qualities of a scholar-athlete-valedictorian,” said high school principal Derek Adams. “She’s composed, well spoken and willing to stand up for her beliefs and values to advance opportunities for others.” Blais has taken dozens of college credits with plans to study secondary education in mathematics at SUNY Oneonta and has contributed both musically and academically to Liberty, playing lead oboe and lead saxophone in honors band ensemble and serving as team captain of the track and volleyball teams.

Monticello Central School District

William Weiss was announced as the valedictorian for Monticello Central School District. Weiss is heading to Binghamton University with a major in English and a minor in political science, and hopes to get into journalism. Weiss has served as the co-secretary for the district’s academy of finance, and is trained and certified to provide tax-preparation services for the community, said high school principal Stephen Wilder: “His attention to detail and his customer service in this program has helped build confidence and appreciation in our community of the stellar ability of our students.”

Sullivan West Central School District

Dylan Sager was announced as the Sullivan West Central School District valedictorian. Sager serves as class president and student representative on the board of education, and is a key impact player for the soccer, basketball and track teams, said high school principal Mark Plescia. “He’s sorely going to be missed both in the classroom and on the field of competition.” He has passion for math and science, and will attend the University of New Hampshire for biology with a concentration in either psychology or neuroscience.

Tri-Valley Central School District

Robert Denman was announced as the valedictorian for the Tri-Valley Central School District. “Robert is a very well rounded student who is a deep thinker. He often doesn’t have a lot to say, but he is always having his mind in motion,” said high school principal David Pulley. Denman has taken the district’s most rigorous math and science coursework and will attend Wilkes College for biology.

Livingston Manor Central School District

Uriel Cortes-Hidalgo was announced as the Livingston Manor Central School District valedictorian. Hidalgo has received numerous academic awards, including multiple appearances on the district’s superintendents’ honor roll for maintaining an A-plus average, and has participated in golf and soccer with the district. He is planning to study biological sciences at SUNY Buffalo.
