‘Neighbors Helping Neighbors’

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Classrooms at the Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children will undergo many changes: they’ll be larger to allow for social distancing and staff will be wearing masks. Children with a hearing loss, however, often rely on visual information and maximizing the use of their residual hearing to accurately understand a message. For the Scranton School, this challenge will be manageable thanks to the kindness of neighbors.

Richard Bowling and his wife Melissa have a 6-month-old daughter, Harper, who has recently been diagnosed with a hearing loss and receives Early Intervention services through Wayne county. Bowling is an active member of the Hawley Rotary, and through Rotary, connected with RSVP of Berks, Wayne and Pike counties. These local organizations worked to ensure that 130 masks with clear, see-through windows were ready for the student’s first day on campus.
