Phase one of Riverside Dog Park open

HAWLEY, PA — Phase one of Hawley’s Riverside Dog Park—a fenced, off-leash dog park in Riverside Park—opened on September 5. The almost one-acre fenced park includes a separate area for small dogs and a gated entrance area to take your dog off leash before entering the play area.

The park’s rules remind all dog handlers that they are responsible for their dog’s actions: everything from ensuring their dogs are healthy to picking up poop to being financially responsible for any damage caused. For safety, all users of the park are required to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

Phase two is underway and will include installation of engraved pavers in the entrance area and benches in the park. Phase three will follow with more play structures and a shade pavilion.

Donations are still being sought to complete the work. Contributions can be made through the Lake Region Community Dock Foundation (www.lrcdf.org) or by mailing a check payable to Lake Region Community Dock Foundation to Riverside Dog Park, P.O. Box 320, Hawley, PA 18428.

Volunteers are also needed to help keep the park operational. To become a volunteer, contact the committee at RiversideDogPark19@gmail.com or by phone at 570-478-1239. To follow the progress, visit Riverside Dog Park 19 on Facebook.

The park is open dawn to dusk.

Milford Readers and Writers Festival

ONLINE — Due to the coronavirus, the Milford Readers and Writers Festival will be broadcast live on Facebook, Twitter & YouTube instead of in person from Friday, September 11 to Sunday, September 13. Join us for “Doing it Write,” four special conversations to celebrate the fifth year of the festival.

Each session will run for 75 minutes, including feedback and questions from viewers. It is free to all.

Gloria Steinem, who appeared at the first festival, will return to talk about “How the Women’s Vote Can Shape the Election” on September 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Two-time festival star Bob Eckstein will interview fellow cartoonists Roz Chast and Matt Diffee exploring “Humor in Trying Times” on September 12 at 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, September 13, there will be two programs. At 1 p.m., Nebula- and Hugo-award-winning science fiction editor Gordon Van Gelder will be in conversation with legendary author Samuel R. Delany, also a multiple Hugo and Nebula Award winner. In addition to exploring the ways science fiction has anticipated the current pandemic experience, they will highlight Milford’s role in the history of science fiction—the famed “Milford Method,” which originated here in the 1950s.

At 7:30 p.m., George M. Johnson, activist and magazine writer, will talk about and debut their autobiography “All Boys Aren’t Blue.” Directed at a young adult audience, it tells their story of growing up black and gay. They will be in conversation with Mark S. King, also an activist and award-winning journalist and blogger, who has been writing about living with HIV since 1985.

The conversations are free and will include a live Q & A session. The “Doing It Write” conversations can be accessed on the Milford Readers and Writers Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages at the scheduled times. For more information, visit www.milfordreadersandwriters.com, or the festival’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MRWFestival or Instagram page at www.instagram.com/mrwfestival.
