Seniors, getting out and about

There are a number of groups in our area geared toward seniors, in addition to the county agencies on aging, that offer companionship, entertainment and/or an opportunity for interesting and useful volunteer activities. Below is a small sampling. The River Reporter welcomes suggestions and information regarding other, similar groups we can let the community know about in future sections. Delaware Young at Heart

Delaware Young at Heart hosts a number of activities at the Delaware Community Center on 8 Creamery Rd., Callicoon, NY.

Delaware Young at Heart is a group for retirees and seniors. Currently scheduled activities include:

• Exercise program, Mondays at 7:30 p.m.

• Walking, Tuesdays from 4:15 to 5 p.m.

• Games including Mah-Jongg, Wednesdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

• Chair yoga, Thursdays from 4:15-4:45pm

Growing Older Together

Growing Older Together (GOT) is a group of volunteers who assist residents of Wayne County and Sullivan County aged 60 and older the practical means as well as the social connection to live independently. Volunteers assist with running errands, helping out around the house, visiting and spending time with members at their homes, and providing technical support with cell phones, computers and other devices. They also hold informational events, like the one on senior scams discussed in the article on pages 11 and 12. Members pay annual dues, but there are no further charges. Red Hats

The Red Hat Society is a playgroup for women created to connect like-minded women, make new friends and enrich lives through the power of fun and friendship. The group is dedicated to providing “recess” from everyday life and creating a support group of fellow sisters. The fee to become “queen” of a local chapter is $49 per year; the fee to become a supporting member is $30 per year. Visit www.redhatsociety.com.

RSVP

Retired Seniors Volunteer Programs (RSVP) is a group for citizens who are 55 or older, have at least a few hours every week to volunteer and enjoy working with others to solve problems in the community. As its web page says, “RSVP offers a full range of volunteer opportunities with thousands of local and national organizations. The Villa Roma Resort & Conference Center

The Villa Roma, located at 356 Villa Roma Rd., Callicoon NY, hosts a year-long schedule of events designed as daytrip destinations for seniors. Daytrips typically include resort activities, a luncheon and afternoon feature entertainment. Seniors can organize groups or attend individually.
