NARROWSBURG and MONTICELLO, NY — To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO) will perform two free concerts in March. They include piano trios and a solo cello work by three maestras of composition: Rebecca Clarke, Caroline Shaw and Cécile Chaminade. The musicians will include Akiko Hosoi (violin), Kristen Jermé (cello) and Gabrielle Chou (piano).
The free performances will take place Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m. in the Krause Recital Hall (37 Main St., Narrowsburg) as part of the Salon Series presented by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, and on Sunday, March 23 at 3 p.m. at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue (18 Landfield Ave., Monticello).
Chaminade was an internationally renowned pianist and composer who received numerous awards and was popular in the U.K. and U.S. Her piano trio is described as a “vibrant work of romantic charm with lyrical brilliance.”
Clarke composed a piano trio, considered today as a compelling example of early 20th-century chamber music, “blending impressionistic textures with modernist clarity and emotional depth.”
Sandwiched in between these two extraverted masterpieces will be Shaw’s “In manus tuas,” a meditative solo cello work inspired by Thomas Tallis’s motet. Blending fragments of the original melody with Shaw’s modern harmonic language, the piece explores the cello’s expressive depth, creating a timeless and introspective soundscape.
