‘The Scientists’ seek to save the planet

CALLICOON, NY — The next stop on the tour for the Dream on the Farm performance “The Scientists” will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 7 at Seminary Hill Cidery.
Dream on the Farm is a decalogue of original climate change plays, created and performed by the Farm Arts Collective between 2020 and 2030. It is, said director Tannis Kowalchuk, a “response to the call from scientists to mitigate a global climate change crisis.”
The performance follows two deceased scientists, Carl Sagan and Lynn Margulis, who compete in a sport that challenges them to “help save life on the planet.” It explores the world through the microscope and telescope, the small effects of climate change and the distant.

Photography contest for the Upper Delaware region

UPPER DELAWARE REGION — The Delaware Highlands Conservancy is holding its fifth annual juried photo contest. It is open to professional and amateur photographers.
The contest is titled “Confluence: Land, Water, Wildlife.” Photographers are invited to capture nature photos in five categories: landscape, wildlife, macro, water and the Van Scott Nature Reserve. There is a youth category for photographers under age 18.
Without disturbing or harming any creature or its habitat, photographers are encouraged to be creative in showcasing the diverse wildlife, plants and special places of our region.
Photos will be judged on creativity, originality, composition, clarity, quality and impact, and must be taken in the Upper Delaware River region to be eligible. Photos can be taken during any season.
Photographers can submit entries from Monday, August 1 until Wednesday, August 31. The winning photos and a people’s choice winner will be chosen by a panel of judges, and will be hung at the ARTery gallery in Milford in November.
The photo contest judges are Mary Sue Sweeney Price, Marie Liu, Paul Plumadore and Mary Clay Fields.
Photographers are asked to submit no more than two photos. Entrants must agree to the official rules and pay a $10 entry fee to be eligible. There is no charge for youth entries.

Founders’ Day street fair

WURTSBORO, NY — The Wurtsboro Board of Trade invites all to the village on Saturday, July 9 for the Founders’ Day street fair.
The fair will be held from 12 noon until 6 p.m.
Local vendors, selling art, crafts, jewelry, clothing, food and more, will return.
The village will also be open for business; all are invited to visit the shops and restaurants as well as the vendors.

Touring gardens with the Wayne Memorial auxiliary

HONESDALE, PA — The owners of eight gardens in full bloom will welcome visitors on Saturday, July 9. The event benefits the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
This is the auxiliary’s first garden tour and its first public event since the start of the pandemic.
The self-guided tour will include maps, a program guide and opportunities to chat with local gardeners about their passion for planting.
“We will showcase beautiful flowers, trees and landscapes in Honesdale, Beach Lake, Lakeville and more,” said co-organizer and auxiliary member Martha Wilson, “and we are thrilled that so many gardeners were willing to work with us. We can’t thank them enough.”
Participants will use their own vehicles to visit each garden of their choice between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The tour starts at the Wayne County visitors center.
Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the tour. Proceeds benefit the Wayne Memorial Hospital Second Century fund and will support the retention and recruitment of qualified healthcare professionals.

Golf for a good cause

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, NY — White Sulphur Springs Sullivan First is hosting their third annual golf fundraiser on Sunday, July 17 at 9 a.m. It takes place at the Swan Lake Golf Course and Country Club.
The beautification committee is dedicated to enhancing the hamlet of White Sulphur Springs, a press release stated. The group was involved with the American flags that line Route 52 through the hamlet and the patriotic welcome banners.
Group members maintain gardens at the welcome signs, as well as several gardens seen as you travel through the hamlet and down Shore Road to Firemen’s Park.

 Christine Andreas to perform at the Eldred Preserve

ELDRED, NY — Christine Andreas, award-winning singer, actress and two-time Tony Award nominee, continues the Bradstan Coming Home Cabaret Series on Sunday, July 10 at 8 p.m. at the Eldred Preserve.
Andreas, best known for her performances in “Oklahoma!” and “On Your Toes,” will perform her show “And So It Goes… Life & Love, Lost & Found.” Stephen Mosher of Broadway World described it as “one of the most erudite, sophisticated and yet down-to-earth shows this writer has yet seen.”
The show will feature songs from Broadway and the Great American Songbook, both classic and contemporary.

Celtic music and Broadway tunes at Harmony in the Woods

HAWLEY, PA — The Foundation for Harmony Presents will hold another music-filled weekend at its amphitheater, Harmony in the Woods.
On Friday, July 8, Celtic/folk group House of Hamill will perform. The show begins at 6 p.m.
The band’s latest release, “Folk Hero,” “captures perfectly the frenetic energy and eclecticism of their always engaging live show,” a spokeswoman said. “A lively collection of original instrumentals, reimagined folk ballads and new songs that showcase the trio’s versatility, ‘Folk Hero’ is the third House of Hamill album to be funded entirely by their fans.”

Joseph Thalken and Michael Winther will perform classical and Broadway tunes at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 9.
Thalken is an award-winning composer, conductor and pianist. His concert works include chamber, choral, orchestral, wind ensemble and vocal music. His chamber-orchestra ballet, “Chasing Home,” has received a world-premiere recording by the Dallas Chamber Symphony, conducted by Richard McKay.
He is joined by Winther, who is acclaimed by the New York Times as a “theater singer of unusual refinement,” with a “voice that traverses genres.” Winther has performed in “Flying Over Sunset,” “1776,” ”The Crucible,” “Damn Yankees,” and “Mamma Mia!”

New York State announces outdoor photo contest

NEW YORK STATE — Two state agencies are launching an outdoor photo contest to highlight New York’s beauty and its parklands.
Officials from the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and Department of Environmental Conservation said the online contest runs for four months—through mid-October—with the winning images to be featured in statewide digital and print campaigns.
The online contest is being held through Saturday, October 15, in partnership with ReserveAmerica.com. A grand prize winner will be selected along with six individual category winners.
The six submission categories are camping life, seasonal spectacular, action and adventure, hiking, views and vistas, and making memories.
The winning images will be featured in the 2023 New York State Camping Guide and with other entries will be used in statewide promotions on social media, websites and in print publications, and highlighted through seasonal marketing campaigns.
All entries must be photographs taken at New York State-owned parklands in the two-year period between June 15, 2020 and October 15, 2022. Contest entries are accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, October 15. Winners will be announced by December 31.
Photos will be judged on the following criteria: originality, artistic composition, technical quality and whether the photograph showcases the best of New York state parks’ camping and outdoor activities.
For the previous contest in 2018, more than 5,200 photos were submitted and nearly 18,000 votes were cast in a competition that captured imagery of the state’s parks, forests, trails, campgrounds, nature centers and other favorite destinations.

Tour the Joel Hill sawmill

EQUINUNK, PA — The Civil War-era Joel Hill sawmill will be open for tours on Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10.
The Cleveland Museum of turn-of-the-(last)-century industrial equipment will also be open next door.
Saturday tours take place at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Sunday tour is at 1 p.m.
The sawmill and museum are extensions of the Equinunk Historical Society and are operated by volunteers from that organization.

Fun at Apple Pond Farm

CALLICOON CENTER, NY — Kids and adults can learn about farming up close and personal, walking in the pastures, seeing the gardens and visiting the barn. The farm will be open from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 9.
The next day, build a partnership with your dog. On Sunday, July 10, beginning at 10 a.m., you and your dog can meet dog trainer Steve Porter and sheep farmer Sonja Hedlund. Reservations are preferred, and tickets cost $15 for the Sunday event.

Sketchbook Parti at the WCAA

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — The Wayne County Arts Alliance (WCAA) is preparing for its 2023 Sketchbook Parti.
This year, there is a new assortment of fresh, unmarred hot-off-the-press illustration boards, with thought-provoking questions both familiar and new, all wrapped with the information you need about this project. Boards and sign-up forms will be available at Sketchbook Parti headquarters through Friday, September 3.
There are only 70 boards available. There is a fee of $20.
Anyone can join the Sketchbook Parti and have their sketch in the show, but only current WCAA members are eligible to be in the juried book.
The WCAA is located across from the swimming pool at Natural Wood Frames, 1875 Fair Ave. and is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Summer classes at Temple Sholom

MONTICELLO, NY — Starting Tuesday, July 12, Temple Sholom will offer an adult education series on Jewish meditation and chant, taught by Rabbi Bella Bogart.
“Is there really such a thing as Jewish meditation?” some ask. “Isn’t authentic meditation Hindu or Buddhist?”
Scholars believe that Judaism has always contained a central meditative tradition, said Rabbi Bogart; it goes back to the time of the patriarchs. Her four-session series of classes will study these practices and their sources.
Rabbi Bogart is a musician and healer, so she plans to include a period of chant and meditation in each session.
The classes will be held in person at Temple Sholom, 5 East Dillon Ave. on four consecutive Tuesdays at 1:30 pm. Participants will be able to attend via Zoom if they can’t be there in person. The cost is $20 per four-session course for temple members and $40 per course for nonmembers.

Open mic at DFL postponed

CALLICOON, NY — The planned open mic event originally scheduled for Friday, July 8 has been postponed to Friday, July 15 at 6:30 p.m. The event reunites fans of the  library’s First Fridays events at the Delaware Free branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library. It’s an open-mic midsummer moment to share new poems and songs.
Registration is required, especially if you plan on presenting, as seats and slots are limited. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Music night at the Phillipsport Community Center

PHILLIPSPORT, NY — Listen to Shades at July’s music night at the Phillipsport Community Center.
