Rachel’s Challenge Go Orange Day celebrates kindness

HONESDALE, PA  — Wayne County celebrates Go Orange Day on Thursday, Oct. 21, marking nine years since the community first embraced Rachel’s Challenge and launched a campaign of kindness.

Wayne Memorial Hospital and the Wayne County Office of Behavioral and Developmental Programs and Early intervention, along with the school districts and other community partners, collaborated to bring the school and community-based awareness programs to the area in 2013.

Named for Rachel Scott, a 17-year-old student who was the first killed in the Columbine High School shooting, Rachel’s Challenge grew from her school and private writings in which she offered a theory that one person who goes out of their way to show compassion can start a chain reaction.

“People will never know how far a little kindness can go,” she wrote.

Go Orange Day is a reminder of how small acts of compassion—a smile, a helping hand, a pat on the back or a pay-it-forward in the drive-through—can ripple through a community and brighten everyone’s day just a little bit.

The Wayne County Commissioners declared Oct. 21 Go Orange Day in Wayne County and everyone is encouraged to wear orange and spread a little kindness. To mark the occasion the courthouse will be lit in orange and bows have been placed around Hawley by students at Wallenpaupack Area School District.

On that day, the Wayne County Social & Wellness Committee and Rachel’s Challenge Committee will offer a Cup of Kindness to employees entering the buildings accompanied by messages of kindness created by the consumers at the psych rehab program. The hospital also plans to do the Cup of Kindness.

Rachael's Challenge,
