LIBERTY, NY — The Liberty Museum & Arts Center is hosting a show of paintings and drawings by Frank DiModica.
A longtime resident of Monticello, DiModica’s roots as an artist are in music, a spokesperson wrote. The artist attended Mannes College of Music in New York, where he was trained as a percussionist. Later as a drummer for the local trio, “Tryangle,” he played the Concord Hotel.
There he became friends with the artist Morris Katz and learned about the power of painting.
During the ‘80s and early ‘90s DiModica became a fixture in NYC’s Soho area as a helper and apprentice to his cousin, sculptor Arturo DiModica, known for the Wall Street sculpture “The Bull.”
Frank DiModica considers himself an old-school modernist, according to his website. He draws inspiration from abstract expressionism, surrealism and music. DiModica approaches painting “with a jazz sensibility.”
The show will run through November 2024. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. or by appointment. There is no charge for admission.
The Liberty Museum and Art Center is located at 46 South Main St., across from the Liberty Theater and Key Bank. Free municipal parking is located behind the bank.
