MONTICELLO, NY — One door closes, another opens.

A few years ago, the old movie theatre in Thompson Square Mall shuttered its doors forever, but through the efforts of a lot of dedicated folks, Marshalls finally came to Sullivan County on Thursday, March 25.

The local department store celebrated its grand opening. Shoppers in search of bargains lined up outside, many of them reportedly waiting in line well before the special opening at 8 a.m.

Christine Schlosser of nearby Harris, NY roamed the packed aisles with her daughter, Julina, and her friend, Kayla.

“I think its excellent and really needed. We don’t have [much] shopping up here... Every time you need something, you had to go to Middletown,” she replied when asked her opinion of the new bricks and mortar buying opportunity.

“I wish they would bring in more of these stores like this,” added Schlosser.

Ronny Murphy traveled to Monticello from her home in Callicoon, NY in search of new stainless-steel cookware.

“I love it. I’ve been waiting a long time. It’s excellent for employment in the area, and we don’t have to go to Middletown to shop. They have a really nice selection of goods, beautiful things. I’m excited,” she said.

When not searching for deals, Murphy works as a real estate broker at Woodstock Way Realty of Bethel, NY.

Not to be outdone, Alva Sava of Fallsburg, NY went on a spending spree with her six-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Originally from El Salvador, she said of the new store, “It’s a very happy [occasion] for me to be here.”

Meanwhile, another shopper was just leaving the store laden with a few Marshalls bags, but declined to give his name for an interview about his experience, stating, “It’s great, but I’m supposed to be at work.”

The Town of Thompson highlighted its Forward Focus Initiative with the opening of the local Marshalls, and according to a press release, town supervisor Bill Rieber Jr., said, “Being a business-friendly town just doesn’t happen. We’ve made it a strategic priority. Our policies, approval process, zoning and overall development approach empower existing businesses to grow and thrive—while encouraging new and outside businesses to open up in Thompson.”

Marshalls is an American chain of off-price department stores owned by TJX Companies that, along with its sister company TJ Maxx, offers family apparel, home furnishings, jewelry, specialty foods and beauty products.

Founded in 1956 by Alfred Marshall and a group of
innovative entrepreneurs, it now boasts more than 1,000 stores nationwide, covering 42 states and Puerto Rico, along with 61 stores in Canada.

Marshalls has a long-standing tradition of national and local partnerships with charitable organizations and continued this community-minded practice by donating $10,000 to the Wallkill Boys and Girls Club, which serves the Monticello area.

“It’s really incredible, super high energy, the store is very vibrant. It’s really good for the community, great for the town,” said a store employee.

Marshalls is located in the Thompson Square Mall at 4058 State Rte. 52.

The store is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information, call 845/794-4571.
