LONG EDDY, NY — A funny thing happened on the way to the Sullivan West High School National Honor Society’s litter sweep along Basket Creek near the tiny, yet historically rich riverside community along the Upper Delaware River.
While the high school students were busy picking up trash near Basket Creek, Shelly Shampine, a long-time resident of Long Eddy, was on Route 97 and the bridge crossing the creek, gathering trash strewn along the roadway.
After harvesting the trash, the graduate of the Delaware Valley Central School Class of 1992 said she carefully placed it into a small wagon, all the while listening to tunes played on a portable radio.
“We’re just cleaning up the Earth,” said Shampine, noting that her biggest find of the day was a long-discarded coffee pot.
