New road, new truck, old tax system: Cochecton makes ready for 2025

COCHECTON, NY — The Town of Cochecton discussed improvements for the new year at the January 8 board meeting, including a new truck, road and generator, and plan to keep a relic of the past by reinstituting the old program for tax collection.

Back in with the old

The Town of Cochecton Tax Collector Eileen Hennessy said she is pleased the town will be returning to its former tax program from the system that had been introduced in 2024. Hennessy said that other towns in the county had had difficulty with the new system, and had reloaded the former software as well.

The computer system used in 2024 left Cochecton with confusion over an excess of $4,000 in the town’s tax account in 2024. The system had syncing issues that led to the error. Hennessy had expressed frustration over the issues, which were shared by other town tax collectors.

And the new

The new truck for the Cochecton Highway Department has been ordered from Robert Green Chevrolet and will be delivered later in 2025, according to highway superintendent Jeff Daub.

Daub also reported that the department has plans to upgrade approximately a mile of Buff Road from dirt to pavement. The work will be paid for with funds from the New York State Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program.

In other infrastructure news, board member Mike Walters announced that the sewage plant will have a new generator and, weather permitting, the generator will replace the old one within the month.

Skinners Falls and Cochecton

Town Supervisor Gary Maas made it clear that the town would like any imminent plans to destroy the Skinners Falls Bridge to take local roads into account. Maas asked Larry Richardson, the town representative to the Upper Delaware Council (UDC), to relay the town’s interest in the fate of the Skinners Falls Bridge. A plan has not been finalized regarding the demolition and/or reconstruction of the bridge. Maas said large vehicles have the potential to damage the small winding roads surrounding the bridge.

The Cochecton Town Board meets on the second Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 12. A work session begins at 7 p.m., followed by the regular business meeting at 7:30 p.m.
