I caught a lot of live shows over the last year, and the Catskills is always brimming with talent performing top-notch plays, musicals and dramas in a variety of venues and locales. For me, one of the standout productions was at the Forestburgh Playhouse, which presented the ‘60s tribal love-rock musical “HAIR “last summer to sold-out crowds.

I get the blues now and then, but it ain’t nothin’ compared to what legendary musician Slam Allen can bring to the table. Although he routinely travels the world singing for his supper, Slam calls Sullivan County home, and fortunately for us, pops up in different venues across the Upper Delaware River region throughout the year.

Every spring, I gleefully anticipate what out-of-this-world entertainment the Pine Bush UFO Festival will provide and the 2019 “Miss Galaxy” pageant did not disappoint, drawing contestants from as far away as Andromeda. This year’s winner slithered on stage and struck a menacing pose while observers like me snapped photos to prove that she had arrived on Earth. You know what they say: “It must be true. I read it in The River Reporter.”

Any minute now, Dharma the Wonder Dog and I will be once again headed for the fantastical Kartrite Resort which boasts a “state of the art Indoor Waterpark like nothing the Catskills has seen before,” and they ain’t kiddin’. In addition to 324 beautifully designed rooms, the resort houses several restaurants, game rooms and plenty of activities for kids of all ages, so, look out world. I’ve got a Speedo and I’m not afraid to use it!

No year-in-review is complete without a tip o’ the hat to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and its always-amazing lineup of headliners, gracing the stage to present concerts under the stars. The 2019 tribute to the Woodstock Music Festival included Santana with Carlos himself front and center as thousands roared in approval.

The Farm Arts Collective production of “Shakespeare on the Farm” was inventive, imaginative and insanely unique. Combining music, dancing, stilt walking and baton twirling, along with earth, wind and fire spinning all around the roving audience, the show left me breathless with anticipation of what the new year will bring.

I like the folks I work with, which comes in handy when I run into co-workers like Owen Walsh, left, and Barbara Winfield, seen here flanking TRR publisher Laurie Stuart. All of us were out to celebrate the inaugural Narrowsburg Logging Days: a true highlight of 2019. Can’t wait for next year!

The 50th anniversary celebrations have come and gone, but the Sullivan Catskills Dove Trail is here to stay as a stunning tribute to the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Proprietor Bonnie Lagoda, center, flanked by SCVA President Roberta Byron Lockwood, left, and Town of Bethel Supervisor Dan Sturm joined dove artist Kim Simons and Woodstock icon Duke Devlin at the unveiling of the very first dove, located at Hectors Inn in Bethel, NY

Even when I have a rare day day off, my trusty camera is always at the ready to capture the magnificent flora and fauna that make up what we call home.

I may not be a big fan of ice and cold, but I have to admit, It’s gorgeous. My coping mechanism for the winter months centers around photographing the Catskills in all its glory. Eat your hearts out, Currier & Ives!
