LIBERTY, NY — On Thursdy, May 18, a group of asylum seekers sent up from New York City arrived in Sullivan County.
The group arrived at the Knights Inn in Liberty in the afternoon. According to a statement from Rob Doherty, chair of the Sullivan County Legislature, 80 people were brought up.
Sullivan County declared a state of emergency, effective 1 pm on Thursday, in response to the asylum seekers' imminent arrival.
"This State of Emergency has been declared due to the fact that the County of Sullivan is currently experiencing a severe housing crisis," reads the emergency resolution. "The County of Sullivan’s housing stock significantly limits its ability to provide temporary, permanent and emergency housing for the citizens of Sullivan County and the clients of Sullivan County’s local social services district. The County of Sullivan is not capable of receiving clients from other local services districts, including New York City, and providing housing to those individuals."
The emergency order provides that no municipality can make contracts with persons, businesses or entities within Sullivan County to house social services clients from another county, and no hotel, motel or other owner of a multiple dwelling in Sullivan can contract with any municipality other than Sullivan County without a license from Sullivan County.
The order was issued by county manager Josh Potosek. It is unclear how the order affects the current status of the asylum seekers in the county.
This is a developing story. Click here for more information and for comments from Sullivan County's representatives.

Asylum Seekers
a person who has left their home country as a political refugee and is seeking asylum in another.
"only asylum seekers who are granted refugee status are allowed to work in the country"
99.99 % are not political refugee's .
Can you blame them ? Come and all will be given to you for free .
They are political footballs . Very sad for all concerned .
