Internationally recognized mountaineer visits library

PORT JERVIS, NY — On Thursday, February 20 at 6:30 p.m., the Hub will host Nimdoma Sherpa, an internationally recognized mountaineer who, in 2008, became the youngest woman to climb Mount Everest.

Open house for prospective BWCA volunteers 

BETHEL, NY — Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (BWCA) will host a volunteer open house on Saturday, February 15 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the event gallery to provide information on volunteering during the upcoming year.

Volunteers play an integral role in concerts, creative programming, and festivals, as well as in The Museum at Bethel Woods. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, BWCA relies on the generosity of volunteers who give their time, talent and attention every season. The open house will include museum tours, presentations and the opportunity to talk with current volunteers and staff members about spring opening, training, scheduling and the rewards of volunteering.

‘Constructed Comfort’ is part of DVAA’s winter salon

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) kicks off the free winter salon series on Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m. with an interactive lecture exploring childhood forts. Stacy Wakefield will present her collaboration on the artist book “Constructed Comfort” about the primary architecture of childhood fort building. The book presents two series of artworks by photographer Ellen Brooks with which Wakefield created a limited edition, riso-printed book. Wakefield will discuss the concept of artist books and show some favorite examples. She will also present the photographs and drawings of forts from the book. Participants will be invited to remember their own childhood forts and contribute to the ongoing project.

 The event will take place on the second floor in the Krause Recital Hall. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

At the library: What is gong meditation?

CALLICOON, NY — Join Marc Switko, NYS licensed psychotherapist and counselor, for a free sound healing session at the Delaware Free Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library on Tuesday, February 18 at 2 p.m. 

Switko has been exploring gong playing as a therapeutic, meditative and performance modality for individuals and groups with solid results. He will use the gong and other sound instruments to demonstrate how one can use vibrational sound as an empowering, healing tool.

‘On-Bestowal’ 

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society (CAS) will present “On-Bestowal,” a solo exhibition from Bill Schuck at the Laundry King located at 65 Main St. on Saturday, February 15. An artist’s talk will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. and the opening reception will follow from 4 to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served and admission is free. The exhibitions will be on view through Saturday, March 14. 

 The Fishkill and Brooklyn based-artist will present his durational site-specific installations at the storefront exhibition space. Schuck creates assemblies controlled by electronic timers and switches. The mechanisms are calibrated to release a single drop of ink or water at a time. 

 The works on paper rather than standing apart as art objects, serve as records of the time and place of their making, paired with the process and conditions in which they were formed.
