Lumberland: new technology for town business

Posted

GLEN SPEY, NY — Like many organizations, the Town of Lumberland has turned to high-tech to be in compliance with state-mandated social distancing edicts.

Meeting via Zoom, the town leaders noted that the meeting was closed to the public but that it would be recorded in its entirety and posted on the town’s Facebook page along with minutes of the meeting within 48 hours of its completion.

By resolution, the town accepted the deeding over of the Knight Cemetery, a formerly privately owned piece of property, from Knight family members.

In continuing business, Martin Caufield Memorial Works was awarded a contract for new bronze plaques for the war memorials across from the town hall.

In other continuing business, the awarding of a contract for website maintenance was tabled for a week. Four vendors that had previously submitted bids have returned lower cost bids to the town, necessitating further review. Supervisor Jenny Mellan noted that this was a priority because the website cannot be updated in its current state.

Also tabled for a week was further discussion on establishing a food pantry to serve town residents during the COVID-19 crisis. The town has been able, with assistance from the county, to distribute some fresh fruits and vegetables and dairy products. Town clerk Laurie Terry noted that, though the school district is continuing its free breakfast and lunch and backpack programs, these initiatives serve the students but are not meant to serve the entire family. Terry will report on some grant initiatives to assist in the project as well as logistics challenges yet to be worked through.

An update of campsite regulations was rescheduled for the regular May meeting due to the need to only conduct essential business and the need to allow for public input.

Noting that all scheduled meetings should be considered tentative, the town kept on its schedule the annual cleanup day on May 16 between 8 a.m. and noon at the town highway garage.

The board also agreed to continue to sponsor the shredding event on its new date. Jointly sponsored with Jeff Bank and other local organizations, the event is now scheduled for June 13 at the Eldred High School.
