ASHOKAN RESERVOIR, NY — A new protocol will limit muddy water releases from the Ashokan Reservoir into the Lower Esopus Creek.
The revised release protocol aims to protect New York City’s water supply while addressing concerns of residents and businesses along the Lower Esopus Creek. The new protocol limits downstream releases of turbid water while expanding releases from both the east and west basins.
The new plan was put together by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), along with NY Senator Michelle Hinchey.
The Ashokan Reservoir supplies about 40 percent of New York City’s drinking water daily.
