DVO says thanks

Dear Erica Highhouse, Jonathan Fox and the rest of the fabulous team at The River Reporter.

We just wanted to take a moment to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reviewing our recent production of “H.M.S. Pinafore.” Our second-weekend performances were both sold out, and we know that this was in large part due to the excitement generated by your outstanding review.

You are a true friend to the arts and we deeply appreciate your contribution to the success of our company. Again, thank you so much!

Your friends at Delaware Valley Opera

Brava, Senator Metzger

How did our brand new New York State Senator, Jen Metzger (SD-42), fair during her first legislative session? She introduced 87 bills of which 75% passed with bi-partisan support.

As chair of the Agriculture Committee, Jen focused much of her concern on the fact that the average age of a NYS farmer is 60. Below are some of the bills passed to encourage new and young farmers to establish themselves:

(Metzger S5822A) Farmers Markets in Parks is a most imaginative bill. By allowing farmers to set up a market in state and local parks, not only are their businesses helped, but consumers have greater access to fresh, locally grown food.

(Metzger S4655) creates an Agricultural Hotline to handle concerns and questions farmers have about grants, research, marketing and finances.

(Metzger S4945) reduces paperwork as well as the money required to register vehicles used solely for agriculture. It passed both House and Senate.

(Metzger S5755) keeps agricultural property taxes affordable and makes it easier to obtain an agriculture assessment.

Brava, Senator Metzger! You’ve had an amazing first term.

The deeper danger to GMOs

The River Reporter recently published an article* about GMOs that I felt was slanted toward the supporters of this technology. In order to inform you further on the topic I have provided a link to a consumer-protection group that considers genetic modification to be extremely harmful to people, animals, plants and the environment, a position that I agree with.

Please read this as soon as possible, since President Trump is planning to finalize a global strategy to force acceptance of GMOs that are exempt from regulation by the Department of Agriculture on October 9. The entire planetary ecosystem is in danger, as you will see from this video.

In the trials against Bayer, you failed to report the jury’s award of $2 billion to a married couple who contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from exposure to Roundup. Besides cancer, glyphosate is thought to be responsible for many other diseases, especially since it is a biocide which, once ingested, indiscriminately kills off one’s gut bacteria, thereby initiating a chain of maladies.

*This editorial was part of a two-part series that explored both the dangers of GMOs and their alternative non-GMOs as related to plant-based burgers.
