HURLEYVILLE, NY — On Sunday, August 4, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., trumpeter Freddie Jacobs will perform at the Sullivan County Museum with the Americana band Little Sparrow.
Jacobs is a composer, educator and jazz trumpeter who has been in the music business for over 50 years. He has toured with jazz legends Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Eddie Palmieri and Jimmy McGriff, and performed around New York with the Sam Jones/Tom Harrell Band and Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers. He has also written and produced two records: “Time Change” and “Jacobs’ Ladder.”
Jacobs spent many years living in Sullivan County, and he will talk a bit about his experience performing in the Catskills hotels. Locals might remember his family; they ran the Monticello movie theatre at the Shoprite plaza.
New addition! Rounder Recording artist Van Manakas (guitar), and Ellen Iovino (vocalist) have been added to the show. Manakas and Iovino will open the concert and perform a short set of jazz standards with Jacobs on trumpet.
For the second set Little Sparrow will perform songs from their repertoire of Neil Young, John Prine, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, etc., and the jazz musicians will join them.
This concert will also be one of the last chances to hear 18-year-old guitarist and recent Sullivan West graduate Henry Simon performing with the band. Simon leaves for college at the end of August.
The concert is sponsored by the Frederick Cook Society and there is no admission charge. Refreshments will be served, and donations are always welcome.
