Laundrette to become a dinner theatre

Exciting changes lie ahead for the Laundrette, located at 20 5th St. in Narrowsburg. They’re undergoing an evolution with the opening of a floating stage on the Delaware River, taking the unparalleled views to a whole new, theatrical level with the opening of a float-up dinner theatre.

Their first production, “My Beautiful Million Dollar Laundrette,” is a mash-up of the 80s classic film, “My Beautiful Laundrette” and the Esther Williams all-swimming “Million Dollar Mermaid.” The cast features Jonathan Charles Fox, in the Esther Williams role, Joan Santo as Ariel, and Dharma the wonder dog as Johnny, the owner of the launderette. Rafters from Landers, acting as a water nymph chorus, will be recruited and trained each weekend.

All joking aside, there is actual, real news regarding the Laundrette. Although 2016 founders Phil and Trish South will be staying onboard as landlords, they have turned the restaurant’s operations over to new management. As of May 2021, Tim Mackabee and Ryan Burke are in charge, staying the course before introducing ideas of their own later in the year.

First plans call for the resuming of tableside service, outdoors only, per all NYS COVID-19 guidelines, starting the first week of May. As a nod to increasing capacity and adhering to all social distancing guidelines, expect an update on layout and design.

Design comes naturally to Mackabee, who has spent years as an award-winning,
professional theatrical set designer. His credits include Broadway productions of “Heathers the Musical” and “The Elephant Man.” A long-time Laundrette fan since buying his house on the Flats, Mackabee is already well versed in the operation. He has been working at the restaurant since early in the pandemic and will provide terrific consistency for the staff and patrons.

Joining him will be business partner, Ryan Burke, an NYC restauranteur specializing in bar operations and design. His credits include La Ventura and The Rum House. Expect the same great drink menu with Burketail updates as things evolve and he and his partner, Luke Brown, settle into their new home in Sullivan County.

Rounding out the Laundrette dream team will be veteran head chef Dave Cole. Anyone worrying can relax. The signature Soppressatta pizza will be staying on the menu, as will all your Laundrette favorites.

So, even though felicitous hopes for Joan Santo singing “Park of Your World” as Jonathan Charles Fox dives off a platform into a ring of fire while Dharma the wonder dog does a dance called the Maytag are on infinite hold, there is much to which we can look forward.

See you on the deck of the Laundrette starting in May.
