Bon Secours Community Hospital completes phase 3 of modernization project

PORT JERVIS, NY — Dignitaries from across the state gathered at Bon Secours Community Hospital (BSCH) on July 22 to celebrate the completion of the third phase of the hospital’s modernization project.

Initiated by Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), a Hudson Valley healthcare network of which BSCH is a part, the $40 million modernization project aims at transforming the hospital through the introduction of state-of-the-art equipment and the development of a “medical village” model.

The equipment upgrades completed for the project’s third phase include an expanded emergency department and an all new imaging suite, which features a cutting-edge 256-slice CAT scanner and an in-house MRI unit. Earlier phases of the project added a new bariatric surgery unit to the hospital, with new equipment supporting chemistry, hematology and pathology services, among others.

The equipment installed through the hospital’s modernization project helps make it a top destination for health care in the region. But it’s the people who use that equipment—the doctors, nurses and other patient-facing staff of the hospital—who are the difference-makers in the hospital’s quality of care.

“As the leadership of an institution, we can’t make our clinicians better than what they have in their heads,” said Michael Israel, president and CEO of WMCHealth. “But as leadership, if we don’t create an environment that... gives them the clinical information that they need to be able to make decisions… they can’t use what they have [in their heads].”

To that end, the modernization project at BSCH isn’t just about bringing the hospital the best equipment. It’s also about transforming the hospital into a “medical village,” using connections with community partners to bring resources such as womens health services, mental health support and pediatrics together in one building.

The new MRI suite forms part of that initiative. Hospital staff said that previously, they had partnered with another healthcare provider for the supply of MRI services. With the new suite, the hospital could supply those services entirely under its own roof.

The network of forces who came together to make the modernization project possible, from the region’s Albany representatives to the members of WMCHealth, show the success which the “medical village” model can inspire. “We have proven that anything is possible when people join forces to make a dream a reality,” said Sophie Crawford-Rosso, the vice-president of patient care at BSCH.
