Is Garnet Health closing?

Conflicting information on a crucial topic

CATSKILLS, NY —Conflicting information has the Sullivan County community concerned about the possibility of Garnet Health closing.

A member of the Senior Legislative Action Committee reported on Friday, September 16 that Garnet Health, Sullivan County's largest regional hospital chain, had petitioned the Department of Health to allow it to close its Harris campus. Reportedly, this would also close down the emergency services at the Callicoon anex.

When asked for comment, a PR representative from Garnet Health denied the report.

"Garnet Health is fully committed to Sullivan County. As we have stated previously, we have no intention of closing Garnet Health Medical Center – Catskills. Any information stating the hospital in Sullivan County is closing is inaccurate and false.

"Garnet Health remains true to our mission of improving the health of our community by providing exceptional healthcare."

Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther told the River Reporter that the reports weren't true, and that she had spoken to Jerry Dunlavey for confirmation. Dunlavey serves as the Vice President of Operations for Garnet Health & as the Chief Operating Officer for Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills.

Jeffrey Hammond, Deputy Director of Communications with the NYS Department of Health, said that "The New York State Department of Health has not been contacted by Garnet regarding the closure of its Sullivan County site."

This is a developing story.

Garnet Health previously attempted to close the critical care unit at its Harris Campus and was denied by the Department of Health; see https://riverreporter.com/stories/critical-care,56469? for more information.
