ELDRED, NY — The Eldred Lady Yellowjackets wrapped up the season with a 4-6 overall record, before falling in the sectionals during a game that went into overtime.

Jordan Lepes, coach of Eldred’s girls’ varsity bucketeers, praised the play of a quartet of seniors, making a few comments about what each contributed to the team effort. “They each offered something different that the underclassmen are still working on.”

Jaelyn Labuda: “She brings a consistent game of spunk and aggression every single game.”

Lily Gonzalez: “Lily was strong in the paint, and could score outside the paint too.”

Jada Reed: “Jada was our agile scorer and had some steals. She always got into foul trouble prior to this season, but this year rarely got into foul trouble… she learned proper defense.”

Dana Donnelly: “Dana does exactly what she’s told with no question. A coach’s dream.”

A quick look at the year-end stats: the leading scorers were Gonzalez and Reed, while Gonzalez was credited with the most rebounds.

“I’m proud of the girls for pushing through despite the obstacles, [but] I wish we had a better finish for sections,” said Coach Lepes. “I’m honored to get to coach the sport I love.”

While the destiny of girls’ varsity basketball at the Home of the Yellowjackets is reportedly a bit cloudy at the moment, Coach Lepes is optimistic about the future.

“I want to rebuild the program with new faces, and am excited to start fresh instead of being thrown into the mix. The girls need to learn fundamentals, and the game-like situations after the basics.”
