JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Reflections of past glory: the triumphs and tears of last year’s season of swats.

In an effort to keep the spirit of local high school sports alive, the River Reporter is presenting a series of retrospective flashbacks from recent events, including softball and baseball games from 2019.

In this time of the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, sports of all sorts are in limbo: the Summer Olympics have been postponed until at least 2021, professional sports are on indefinite hold and collegiate through high-school scholar-athletes are cooling their heels.

While some of the players pictured have since graduated, others were looking forward to getting back out on the local ‘fields of dreams’ in search of victory and the spirit of competition and comradeship found on the fields of play.

So, here’s to memories past and dreams to be fulfilled somewhere down the road.

On April 12, 2019, the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs took on the Lady Indians of Liberty during a varsity softball game as part of the inaugural Sullivan West Tournament.

But things didn’t go as planned for the home team as Sullivan West was blanked 16-0 in a game that was called after five innings.

On April 13, 2019, it was all baseball as the Bulldogs defeated the visiting Wildcats of Livingston Manor 13-2 in yet another matchup shut down after five frames.

This series of reviews focuses on previously unpublished photos from the events so, in a sense, in the words of Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

And in the words of Jim McKay, long-time host of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, a chance to relive “the constant variety of sports… the thrill of victory… the agony of defeat… the human drama of athletic competition.”
