LACKAWAXEN & BERLIN TOWNSHIPS, PA — A proposed intermunicipal agreement where road maintenance is split between Berlin and Lackawaxen Township could pave the way (pun intended) for improvements on Cortese Road.
The agreement is necessary because Cortese Road, and several others in the Welcome Lake area such as Miller and Cosgrove Roads, are split between Lackawaxen and Berlin townships.
Currently, Lackawaxen and Berlin have a handshake agreement over the plowing of those roads, Lackawaxen Township Supervisor Jeff Shook said at a December 16 meeting. It’s first come, first served, he said; “Whoever gets over there and plows kind of took care of it.”
Lackawaxen Township is looking to make improvements on Cortese Road, because there are around 30 Lackawaxen residents who live on it, he said.
However, Shook added, the worst part of the road is in Berlin Township.
Berlin Township is “reluctant to put a whole lot of money into that road,” he said, which is “understandable, [because] they don’t have any residents on it.”
The two townships are working on an agreement where Berlin Township takes the maintenance of Miller Road and Cosgrove Road, and Lackawaxen Township takes the maintenance of Cortese Road.
According to Shook, if that agreement comes together, Lackawaxen Township can move forward with improvements to Cortese Road. He said the township may put it out to bid next year to pave the road, but it wouldn’t make sense to do so unless it was able to maintain the road at its worst part.
