If you don’t have the luxury of a “rainy day fund” or emergency savings account, unforeseen events—such as a sickness, injury or car accident—can quickly snowball into a financial burden. At times, these small bumps in the road can feel insurmountable.
For Mary*, a single mother of two young children living in Orange County, NY, one challenge after another resulted in a precarious financial situation.
Despite working full time, Mary depleted a large portion of her savings due to necessary medical expenses. As she was rebuilding her nest egg, another crisis struck—she hit a deer while driving home from work, leaving her car near-totaled. Though she wasn’t injured in the car accident, another medical issue presented itself a few weeks later, requiring minor surgery.
No matter how hard she tried, Mary couldn’t stop this snowball of financial misfortune from growing. It seemed that she just couldn’t get back on track.
That’s when the People for People Fund stepped in to lend a helping hand. By providing a one-time grant to supplement Mary’s rent, People for People Fund helped Mary get back on her feet, and back on the path to a secure financial future.
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, People for People Fund provides interim financial support to Orange, Sullivan and Ulster County residents. Built on the notion of “neighbors helping neighbors”, the Fund aims to help hardworking, self-sufficient individuals maintain their financial independence. It helps those who—just like Mary—are suddenly faced with something outside of their control and, as a result, are confronted with a temporary financial hardship.
Having donated over $100,000 to qualified applicants in the past year alone, the People for People Fund is determined to remain a pillar of support—and, more importantly, hope—in the Hudson Valley.
The Fund would not be possible without the help of our community. As we continue our annual giving campaign, we ask each of you to donate what you can, whether it be time or money.
