It’s a wonderful time of year for events and deals in Honesdale and apparently has ever  been this way: a “Great Clearance Sale” comes to mind of J.N.C. Bader’s entire stock that “must be sold at once, regardless of cost”; the Bregstein Bro’s shop is offering “decidedly new designs” of “Gentlemen’s Correct Clothes Fashions” at “greatly reduced prices”; and Comedienne Fanny Rice (yes, that’s Fanny Rice!) will be headed to town to perform in “A Day Off” at the Lyric Theatre on New Year’s Day.

This trifecta of local awesome is revealed through the December 30, 1908 edition of the bygone newspaper “The Honesdale Citizen.”

Presently, the same story goes, illustrating that past is indeed prologue. Today there’s plenty to experience up and down Main Street in our river valley town, sparklingly surrounded by snow-capped, sloping hills of the Lackawaxen. Holiday or no holiday, this story is a constant, and it recurs, like the recent return of sunshine’s prominent position in our existence.

More light and opportunity for growth lead me* toward the kind of reflection afforded those who walk through “winter wonderlands,” making plans “to face unafraid” a new year, a proposition noted poetically by one-time Honesdale resident Richard Bernard Smith. Before the growing season returns in full, as our days get longer, and while we’re presented with this year-end’s harvest of things to participate in, let’s make a point to cherish the gifts already around us. In doing, cultivating new gifts in 2020 should become a bit easier.

There’s always a bunch going on in Honesdale. Enough to write a semi-regular column about, in fact. Seasonal deals and events abound. That said, any upcoming calendar specifics or menu offerings worth sharing now matter less than time spent anywhere, doing anything with friends and family. May we all find love and renewed creative energy this winter —ideally over warm meals prepared from the generous bounty grown by our local farm neighbors.

Cheers to celebrating the wonder of abundant potential we’re gifted throughout the backyard lands and neighborhoods we share on both sides of the Delaware River and beyond. Happy New Year.
