Tis’ the season to be… spooky.

That’s right. It’s October.

This isn’t some flyover month here in Honesdale, and we’re not defined by a mere increase in candy sales. October is a legit start to the holiday season around these parts—Festivaltown style! Keep an eye out for celebratory banners and primo-poster art but, since you’re already here, a quick rundown follows.

This upcoming weekend is both Second Saturday Honesdale (October 12) and Harvest & Heritage Days (October 12 and 13). The former being a monthly concentration of a creative energy spilling out of Main Street and the latter being a collection of seasonally appropriate family activities strewn throughout town. Of particular note is Saturday’s live music combination/presentation of the silent, angular-shadowy classic “Nosferatu.”

Nefarious Musical Accompaniment will be performing an original score to this vampiric landmark at The Cooperage on Saturday night. This free, BYOB event will also feature a poster exhibition showcasing this year’s poster designs for the following weekend’s Canaltown Short Spooky Movie Festival (Spookyfest). The Cooperage and Canaltown partnered up for two silent movie/live music jams this past summer. Three such events in one year sets a new local record so, take note, Honesdale happenings statisticians. (Begin extended paragraph pause so I* can take note.)

The following weekend’s Saturday (October 19) brings more autumnal cinema to The Cooperage for Canaltown’s sixth annual Spookyfest. Spooky short moving pictures from the world over and within our own backyard will be presented Saturday night to a popcorn-frenzied audience who will be voting for their favorites so Spooky Awards (locally crafted and unique each year) can be awarded before the night concludes and everyone transforms into werewolves. This is a popcorn-for-the-people event, meaning coconut-oil-popped popcorn will be included with your entry. Find tickets online (C’town website) or at the door (Cooperage).

The following following weekend’s Saturday (October 26) brings an annual costume party and dance party to The Cooperage for the Wayne County Arts Alliance’s Halloween Bash. Awards will be given to best costumes, live music will be provided by Group du Jour’ to keep you moving and MURDER... er... all sorts of good times await. The Halloween Bash is BYOB and a fries-for-the-people event, meaning French fries will be included with your entry. Find tickets at the door or in advance by asking around your neighborhood watering hole with the largest congregation of people wearing crazy costumes.

Finally, the Honesdale Area Jaycee’s annual Halloween Parade takes place Tuesday (October 29) along Main Street. This is the annual parade of parades because, well, October is Festivaltown in Honesdale and the holiday season starts early around these parts.
