Honesdale’s canal re-emerged during the storm last week.

Ancient, town-building energy can’t be held back. Of equal importance, neither can water. There’s been a renewed effort to connect a trail between here and Hawley. Who knows—maybe a portion of the trail in downtown Honesdale will someday allow for boating.

Cheers to fresh, local food jumping back on the menu. Area farmers’ markets have returned, including the Wayne County Farmers’ Market, which pops up on Saturdays from now through October in the Super Duper parking lot. Your author* has been buying every lettuce varietal in sight, so get there early. Beyond vegetables, an assortment of other local creations is growing too.

Two walk-in cinema events are upcoming. Both feature area musicians and both sets of musicians will be performing live, original scores to classic silent movies at The Cooperage Project on Main Street.

On June 8, as part of Second Saturday Honesdale, Nefarious Musical Accompaniment for Silent Films will be providing the accompanying soundscape to Charlie Chaplin’s “Behind the Screen” and “One A.M.” Then, on June 14, the night before the annual Roots & Rhythm Music & Arts Festival, Lone Duck will be giving the audio treatment to Robert Weine’s “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” Both events are presented by Canaltown and The Cooperage, free to attend, happening outdoors and welcoming of BYOB/concessions. Then, Roots & Rhythm’s yearly, festivaltown throwdown pops off on Saturday, June 15.

On June 22, more moving pictures burst forth during the second annual Canaltown Moving Movie Festival. This event is a festival exploded into parts and strewn throughout downtown Honesdale. Multiple theater venues will activate and each will play a venue-specific set of movies. Showtimes will repeat on the hour, with time between them for walking between theaters. All told, this is a “choose-your-own-festival” adventure. Concessions may be found at local bars or pizza joints. People will be floating around town with lanyard passes. A parking lot may feel more like a film projection party. The local landscape will be ripe for participation, as lines between town and festival blur.

Finally—and switching back to music for a second—Honesdale Central Park’s summer concert series is set to begin. These shows happen on Mondays and Thursdays, running from June 10 to July 29. They’re free concerts put on annually by the Wayne County Creative Arts Council. Summer ramps up quickly around here. Welcome to Honesdale.
