‘Female Power in Art’

BARRYVILLE, NY — On Saturday, May 1, Nonneta and Friends will host an opening reception for its new exhibit, “Female Power in Art,” from 3 to 6 p.m. The show will be on display through the end of the month.

From a statement describing the exhibit, “Artists in this show present their vision of the world through subject, color, medium and form. Female power, especially artistic female power, is not necessarily strong or weak, feminine or masculine. It does not represent gender itself—it is what’s behind the skin, under the surface.”

The show features works from Christi Johnson, Maria Vud, Karen Flood, Ekaterina Turner and Nonna Hall.

Nonneta and Friends is located at 16 Old Brook Rd. For more information, visit www.nonnetaandfriends.com  or call 845/456-0320.

RR columnist Kim Simons leads workshop

ONLINE — On Thursday, May 6 at 6 p.m. the E.B. Crawford Library will provide a virtual program, Painting With Royal Icing on Fondant, presented by Kim M. Simons.

In this demonstration, award-winning artist, food artist and cake artist, Simons will teach you how to paint beautiful designs on fondant with royal icing.

Kim was named one of the top 10 cake artists by Dessert Professional magazine. She took lessons by local artist and teacher C. Leland Parks, of Liberty High School, to heart. In 2010, Kim watched a TV show featuring food art—specifically cakes. Simons then began creating detailed and unique pieces with food.  She entered one of her first pieces in a major cake show and won the top prize, followed by more victories in shows and appearances on The Food Network and demonstrations at venues throughout the country. Locally, she is responsible for painting four-and-a-half doves along the Sullivan County Dove Trail.

Registration is limited to 100. For more information and to register, visit www.ebcpl.org and then click on “May 2021 Adult Calendar.”

Celebrating International Friefighters’ Day

REGION — To support hometown heroes in commemoration of International Firefighters’ Day on Tuesday, May 4, light the town red. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is asking residents, communities, businesses and fire departments from coast to coast to celebrate firefighters.

Change the lightbulb on your front porch, or change the color filter shining on your business, to highlight the great work firefighters do every day. Then take a photo and share on social media with the hashtag #Shine4Firefighters. If you need red lightbulbs, you can support the NFFF and buy online at www.amzn.to/2XWm5oE.

Post a picture on your social media platforms of a firefighter who is important to you with the hashtag #ThisIsMyFirefighter.

For those who want to go the extra mile to show our firefighters gratitude, the NFFF invites you to draw, color and share your thank-you by emailing a photo of your artwork to photos@firehero.org and using on social media with the hashtag #WeThankFFs. NFFF will share your works of art on its website and social media on International Firefighters’ Day to raise spirits and celebrate firefighters everywhere.

International Firefighters’ Day was established in 1999 to honor the lives of five firefighters who died in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia, and to recognize the service and sacrifice that firefighters around the world make daily. This day of recognition is at the core of what the NFFF does: to honor and remember America’s fallen firefighters, to assist their families in rebuilding their lives and to prevent firefighter line-of-duty injuries and deaths.

For more information, visit www.firehero.org/firefighters-day.
