Historic church opens for Memorial Day service

Posted

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Tusten Settlement Association will hold a Memorial Day Service on Sunday, May 30 at the Old Baptist Church located on NYS Route 97 four and one-half miles south of Narrowsburg, beginning at 2 p.m.

Steve Knutsen will be a guest speaker with members of the VFW Tusten, Highland, Lumberland Post 6427, and local clergy participating in the service.

A graveside salute will follow the service. American flags will be accepted for proper disposal by the American Legion.

The church was constructed in 1856 to provide a house of worship for the Tusten Settlement community of logging families and later employed stone cutters and farmers. After the settlement deteriorated due to lack of demand for quarried stone, the congregation became too small to support the church causing its closing. The building is being restored through the administration of the Tusten Settlement Association which was formed in 1969, obtaining funding through contributions from members and friends. Lifetime membership is available for $100 for those interested in helping carry out the work of restoration.

Current CDC guidelines will be followed.

All are welcome. For more information, please call Ralph Huebner at 828/337-5064 or Kathleen Johnson at 845/798-2998.
