Highland becomes Clean Energy Community

Posted

ELDRED, NY — The Town of Highland has been added to the state’s list of Clean Energy Communities by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The announcement from the town came on April 2 and stated the designation recognizes the town’s “leadership in reducing energy use, cutting costs and driving clean energy locally.”

The state’s Clean Energy Initiative supports local governments by providing grants to eligible municipalities to help further energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable development.

In order to achieve certification, the town had to complete four of 10 high-impact clean energy actions identified by NYSERDA as part of the Clean Energy Communities initiative. The designation allows the town to apply for up to $5,000 for clean-energy projects with no local cost share.

Town supervisor Jeff Haas said, “The Town’s Energy Committee, composed of John Back, Nancy Gilmore, Carol Roig and Councilman James Gutekunst, together with town building inspector Dave Preston, are to be commended for working long and hard to achieve Clean Energy Communities designation.”

Councilman Gutekunst added, “We also thank Sullivan County’s Office of Sustainable Energy for their assistance in completing the benchmarking energy action.”

Among the renewable energy projects the town is pursuing is the establishment of multiple electric vehicle charging stations in the town. Businesses interested in hosting a charging station are urged to contact building in building inspector Preston at 845/557-8203 for details.

The Town of Highland now joins the Clean Energy Communities Program, after the towns of Bethel and Tusten, and Sullivan County itself.
