Here comes PA 4-H week

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — This year, March 12-18 is PA 4-H week, and I can’t think of a better time to check out what joining the 4-H program can offer!

4-H isn’t just about raising animals for the Wayne County Fair, although that is very fun and entertaining. Many other projects can also be entered if you do not have facilities or room to raise animals. These non-animal projects can include things such as woodworking, sewing, cooking, gardening and the sciences, to name a few.

By doing 4-H projects for the fair, you will learn financial and time management skills.

Wayne County has 16 local 4-H clubs that you could join. Clubs also participate in community service projects and other educational events, day camps and workshops throughout the year.

I got involved in 4-H because I thought it would be fun to take some animals to the fair, and I saw how much my friends enjoyed it. Since then, I have met many other kids by going to the fair, and by participating in county-level events and competitions. I probably would have never met them if it weren’t for 4-H.

Being involved in 4-H has allowed me to work hard on a project and proudly show it off at the fair. From experience, I know sometimes animals won’t behave, or pumpkins won’t grow well, but I have learned what I need to work on for the next year to improve my knowledge of the things I am interested in.

If you are thinking of joining 4-H, new members need to sign up by Friday, March 31. If you are unsure of who to contact to join, the Penn State Extension Office in Honesdale, 570/253-5970 ext. 4110, will be able to help.

Nicole Non is the Wayne County 4-H Teen Council vice president.
