We finally made it to May. The snow is gone, the days are longer, and now is the perfect time to spend the days outside. Minus the mayflies!

Here are a few new happenings taking place in the upcoming weeks, so be sure to mark your calendars.

The Women’s Community Club of Cochecton will again offer small scholarships to Sullivan West graduating seniors who live within the Town of Cochecton. The only requirement is a brief essay about community service. Length doesn’t matter; the goal is to encourage students to think about helping the community. Although the deadline has recently passed, students can still be considered. Contact the guidance department or email pamdeman@charter.net.

Attend a garden barbecue to learn about the future farm at 120 Stony Rd. in Lake Huntington. It takes place on Saturday, May 7 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Lunch and tea will be served, and children and families are welcome. Text to RSVP 609/323-5334 or email silverlotusfarm@gmail.com.

Join SUNY Sullivan for its 30th annual kite festival on Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the SUNY Sullivan courtyard. Parking and admission are free, and the first 200 kids will receive a free kite. The festivities include a kite show, a film festival, bubble displays, vendors, a kids’ bouncy house, a DJ, food and more.

Celebrate shad history at the Erie depot. The Cochecton Preservation Society will hold a celebration on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s located at 8537 Rte. 97 in Cochecton. There is also a poster contest for K-12 students; the theme is “shad celebration.” Call 845-932-8104 or email cps12726@gmail.com to register.

The Turtle Trot is on Saturday, July 9. It starts at 8 a.m. at the Kenoza Lake Firehouse. Sign up, sponsor or donate prizes for the raffles. Call April Rutledge at 845/701-9054 or email farmerack@yahoo.com.

Get your EMT Basic certification this summer. SUNY Sullivan is holding the 12-week course beginning Wednesday, June 1. Email captain Mike Bruce at cochectonambulanceems@gmail.com  for an application packet.

There will be a penny social hosted by the Rhythm & Grace dancers on Saturday, May 14 at the Livingston Manor Firehouse, 93 Main St., in Livingston Manor.

Rhythm & Grace is a performing arts studio located in Livingston Manor.

Doors open at 3 p.m. and calling starts at 5 p.m. Admission for people aged 12 and up costs $4; the cost is $3 for those under 12. There will be gift certificates, toys, books, movies, 50/50 raffles—something for everyone, as well as refreshments for sale. The proceeds will benefit the Rhythm & Grace performers who will be dancing at Universal Studios this summer.

If you have a local business that would like to be spotlighted in an upcoming column, get in touch. Email jenn@jennpowelldesigns.com with any news, events, and happenings.
