Hambletonians ‘rein in’ Yellowjackets

ELDRED, NY — “Horsepower” won the game for the Hambletonians from Chester Academy on January 11, when they defeated the home team Eldred Yellowjackets’ boys’ varsity hoopsters 66-21.

Despite a slow start, once the Hambletonians had the bit in their teeth, it was off to the races as they outpaced the Yellowjackets in all four frames in William “Coach” Werneke Gym.

Doing the math, it was a game of strength on the bench, as the visitors had nine players in reserve, allowing their coach to rotate in fresh horses, while Eldred fielded a slim six-man squad.

In mathematical essence, the Yellowjackets had a team of five plus one, while Chester boasted a five-man team plus nine, just one player shy of three teams.

Eldred (0-4) is coached by Bill Furler, while Chester (7-1) features Jon Marsilio at the helm of a team the mascot of which is Hambletonian 10, a legendary harness-racing steed, the ancestor of almost every standardbred horse in the country.
