Gratitude is an attitude. But it’s also a practice that invites action. On that note, I take this opportunity to celebrate the community newspaper that you are either holding in your hands or reading online right now—the River Reporter.

Gratitude is an attitude. But it’s also a practice that invites action. On that note, I take this opportunity to celebrate the community newspaper that you are either holding in your hands or reading online right now—the River Reporter.

Thanksgiving and the ensuing holiday season remind us of the many riches of life in the Upper Delaware River region. How truly blessed we are to live in this special place—and to have a vessel for learning about this multi-faceted gem with every weekly issue that arrives via our mailboxes or electronic devices.

Sustaining a community newspaper is growing ever more challenging, but has never been more vital to fostering healthy communities. Many such essential sources of local news have been lost in recent years, with likely more to follow a similar fate.

That doesn’t have to be the case. If you already subscribe to this newspaper, please know how much your support is appreciated! If you’ve been thinking about subscribing, but haven’t gotten around to it, please know how much your support is needed!

With the season of giving upon us, please consider subscriptions for your loved ones too. We’ll keep them informed about important local issues, intriguing local people and businesses, the region’s abundance of art, music and culture, as well as what’s helpful to know about local flora and fauna.

We’d be grateful for the opportunity to connect with your family and friends. Isn’t that what community is all about?

On this closing note, I sing the praises of the devoted folks who work so hard behind the scenes to bring the River Reporter to life—and to our lives—every week despite limited resources and sometimes grueling deadlines.

Two who come immediately to mind are managing editor, Annemarie Schuetz and online editor and production manager, Amanda Reed. For their skills, craft, compassion, patience and sense of humor, I am ever thankful.

Reed is responsible for the lovely layout and design that readers enjoy in every issue. Schuetz is the type of editor that every writer would be privileged to work with—one who reads and responds with heart, while caring about the person behind the pen. That’s the kind of connection that characterizes community newspapers. And it’s worth every effort to keep it alive.
