Free classes in sustainable practices

ONLINE — The Penn State Extension is offering a catalogue of classes for free, with 60 days to access the content, if you register by April 30, and many that are being offered work toward a more sustainable future. These are all beginner-level classes that may very well teach you, who is stuck under a stay-at-home order, something you can implement in your day-to-day life.

Beekeeping 101 is about the science and practice of beekeeping is for beginning beekeepers. You will learn to understand the science of honeybees, implement the best practices of experienced beekeepers, understand bee biology and behavior, use typical beekeeping clothing and equipment, manage a hive throughout the year, identify and treat common bee pests and diseases, outline various bee products you and your bees can make and understand pollination and the role bees play in it. This class is in 10 sections totaling nine hours.

Nutrition 101: Healthy Eating Guidelines and Meal Planning teaches the basics of nutrition and practical suggestions for creating healthy food choices to improve and maintain your health. You will learn to use MyPlate to plan healthy meals; sharpen your ability to read labels and make informed choices at the food store; assess the legitimacy of nutritional claims; avoid food-borne illness, as well as food allergies and intolerances; develop research-based lesson plans and provide engaging presentations to educate diverse consumers on nutrition, diet and health topics; and help others in your home, workplace, or community make healthy dietary changes. This class is in six sections totaling six hours.

In Teach for Forests: Forest Education for Teachers and Youth Leaders, you will learn about trees, wildlife, water and ecology. You will learn how to teach youth using appropriate forest teaching activities and curricula; understand how abiotic, biotic and cultural factors shape ecosystems; recognize the specific habitats and species of Pennsylvania; and understand best land use and management practices. This class is in six sections totaling 9.5 hours.

Applied Biogas Technology: Converting Organic Waste to Energy teaches about biogas. Biogas is a renewable natural gas produced from organic waste. You will learn to differentiate between renewable energy and sustainable energy, identify the major types of biogas, identify the key components of a biogas system, estimate biogas yield from a given feedstock, identify scenarios that are favorable for biogas project development and carry out a simple economic analysis of a biogas system. This class is in five sections totaling three hours.

In Plant Health Diagnosis: Assessing Plant Diseases, Pests and Problems, you will learn a process for diagnosing plant health problems, including signs and symptoms of diseases, pests and insects, and environment or management issues. This class is in four sections totally two hours.
