I am deeply saddened to learn that the New York Supreme Court in Albany has ruled against New York City’s foie gras sales ban. I hope my fellow New Yorkers refuse to purchase this cruel and unhealthy dish.
Ducks and geese thrive in water, on land and in the air. In nature, they migrate hundreds of miles annually. But ducks and geese raised for their flesh are crammed in dark sheds, deprived of everything that is natural and important.
To produce foie gras, workers force-feed male ducks by inserting pipes down their throats twice daily, causing the birds’ livers to swell to up to 10 times their normal size. The swollen livers make it difficult for many birds to stand as their abdomens become distended.
Hey, New York, let’s stand up for animals by refusing to purchase or eat foie gras. And let’s encourage restaurants and stores that offer foie gras to also ban its sale and, perhaps, offer vegan pâté instead.
