LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The undisputed highpoint of the boys’ varsity basketball game between the home team Bulldogs of Sullivan West and the Monticello Panthers on February 25, was Monti’s Josh Gattling posting his 1,000th point of a noteworthy high school career during the visitors’ dominating 91-48 win.

Gattling accomplished that notable feat around the 5:30 mark of the third frame. The game was momentarily stopped for a mid-court ceremony.

Monticello’s senior star took to the hardwood with a total of 981 points under his belt, just 19 points away from earning a spot in the Panthers’ history book by making the 1K Club.

Going into the non-league match-up, the Bulldogs (7-13 overall, 2-2 league) faced a juggernaut of a team in the form of the Panthers. Despite falling behind in every frame as Monticello (14-6, 10-2) ignited the scorebook beyond the 491-degree ignition point of paper, the Bulldogs played with their own brand of fire, refusing to call it quits.

The hard-fought game witnessed the opposition stepping up to the foul line 30 times (17/30, 57 percent), while the home team picked up 12 freebies (6/12, 50 percent).

The Panthers out gunned the home team in all four periods: 21-11, 31-11, 21-14 and 18-12. In the fourth frame, both coaches sent in their respective benches to give everyone a shot in the last game of regular season play.

Sullivan West’s top scorers: Gabe Campanelli (12 points), Chris Campanelli (11), and Nick Dwortesky and Eli Foster each posted a 3-pointer.

Monticello’s netting was across the board, a demonstration of teamwork and a well-balanced attack on the glass: Josh Gattling (19 points), Alonzo Stergis (17), Jordan Ruggiero (15 including a 3-pointer), Damorn Hall-Rucker (15 including a 3-pointer), Trevon Gray (6 including a 3-pointer), and contributing points from outside the arc were Jaden Milton, Tyrone Bridges and Dayshawn York.
