LIBERTY, NY — For over a decade a group has been meeting at the hospital in Harris to support those with Parkinson’s disease (PD), their caregivers and families. Now the group is moving its meeting this year to Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) beginning Wednesday, June 12 at 4 p.m. It will continue to meet the second Wednesday of the month at CCE thereafter.
PD is a neurological disorder that affects the dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. Symptoms and progression can be different in each patient, but early signs can include tremor, slowness of movement, muscle stiffness and balance problems. Members in the group have indicated that issues with swallowing, tiny handwriting, and very quiet voices were some of the signs they noticed first.
Nobody has to speak up at a support group, but there’s plenty to learn. The Sullivan County group talks about what to expect after diagnosis, what the future could look like and how to manage symptoms. Family members or caregivers are welcome, and learn how to take care of themselves as well as their loved one.
Sometimes there are speakers, and books and snacks are available.
“There’s nothing like sharing with those who have what you have,” said organizer Angela Page.
CCE is located at 64 Ferndale-Loomis Rd., right off Route 52 near the Radio Catskill station.
