Delaware Highlands Conservancy to open Beach Lake campus

BEACH LAKE, PA — Delaware Highlands Conservancy (DHC) has received a gift of 144 acres on Perkins Pond Road from that property’s previous owner. The land inherited will be used to advance the conservancy’s education, conservation and research missions, according to township supervisor Cathy Hunt.

Speaking at the November 18 Berlin Township Board of Supervisors meeting, Hunt noted that the DHC has become synonymous with eagle watches and other trademark Upper Delaware River Region nature study activities and events. The DHC is an accredited land trust dedicated to protecting and preserving sustainable working farms, clean water, natural habitats, community recreation venues and heritage sites.

The Beach Lake campus will augment the conservancy’s current offices in Hawley, PA and Bethel, NY, both of which oversee conservation easements. Easements are voluntary, legally-binding agreements between landowners and a land trust for the purpose of conserving a property’s natural values. The landowner retains title to his property, while continuing to live on it and use it within the terms of the easement. For more information on DHC, see www.delawarehighlands.org.

In other business, supervisor Charlie Gries said the recent election had gone well at Berlin’s two polling places, the Beach Lake Fire Department and the Human Resources Center. But he noticed that some senior and disabled voters struggled with the long walk from distant parking spots to the entrance. He suggested that, in the future, each polling place reserve some parking spots close to the entrance for seniors and the disabled. Gries volunteered to check with the Wayne County Board of Elections or the county commissioners to see which authority is responsible for polling place parking and ask that agency to implement reserved parking.

The township’s proposed 2020 budget will be available for inspection at the Beach Lake Community Center, per advertised times.
