ROSCOE, NY – For the home team Blue Devils football team, Saturday, October 23 was a dog day afternoon, as the Sullivan West Bulldogs defeated Roscoe 28 - 6, in the Division I eight-man football matchup on Coach Fred Ahart’s hallowed hometown turf.

The Roscoe/Downsville/Manor Blue Devils probably got the idea that things might not go their way when, on the opening kickoff return, Sullivan West’s special teamer Jacob Hubert ran it 75 yards into the endzone, to put the Dawgs up 6-0 at 11:47. A 2-point conversion added another couple of points to make it an 8-0 gridiron contest.

The Blue Devils (4-1) replied with their lone TD of the afternoon a few minutes later at 9:37, on a TD by Joseph Gould, but the 2-pointer came up short.

From that point on, it was all Sullivan West, (5-1), as Rally Cruz posted two TDs, QB Gavin Hauschild scored and Justin Grund put the nail in the coffin to close out the offense onslaught. With the win, Sullivan West clinched the Division I title

SW stats: 320 total yards (218 yards rushing—Hauschild 96 yards, Cruz 44 yards, Terrell Spencer 41 yards, Grund 32 yards, Hubert five yard); passing—Hauschild 102 yards; receiving—Justin Grund 69 yards, Jaymes Buddenhagen 21 yards, Spencer 10 yards, Hubert 2 yards).

Defense leading tacklers—Cruz 8, Buddenhagen 5, Dillan Hanslmaier 3, Hubert 3.

R/D/M stats: Alaniz Ruiz rushed for 72 yards, posted 11 tackles and forced a fumble; Anthony Teipelke rushed for 16 yards and passed for 86 yards, including a 23-yarder to Gould who racked up a total of 31 yards receiving.

Before the opening kickoff, Roscoe honored their senior football players: Benjamin Ackerly, Kevin Bear, Matthew Bowers, Nathan Bowers, Steven Brown, LaKota DeWitt, Joseph Gould, Daniel Irwin, Alaniz Ruiz, John Schroeder and Eric Tomah.

“This is one of the best seasons I’ve been part of; keep it going boys!” said Bulldogs assistant coach Justin Diehl during the post-game huddle, adding, “You’re a hell of a team, I’m proud of you.”

Ron Bauer, Sullivan West’s veteran football helmsman chimed in with his two cents, “They played a great game, bounced back from last week’s loss. The kids really stepped it up and the special teams did a great job.”

Mike Dill, coach of the Blue Devils, learned the game of sports playing for Fred Ahart (1947-2020), Roscoe’s beloved coach and athletic director.

Of the matchup against the Bulldogs, he said, “I thought it was a very tough game. They got a couple of breaks early and we really struggled. We could not get close.”

Dill noted that the Blue Devils kicked off the season 0-2, but quickly rebounded with four straight wins before taking on Sullivan West.
