Dam down causes a temporary rush of water in Highland

YULAN, NY —  A temporary dam across Beaver Brook  was breached on December 1, causing flooding conditions but no permanent damage.

The temporary dam, located at the bridge construction site on County Road 22, had been breached, causing water to begin flowing onto the permanent concrete dam, according to the Yulan Fire Department who were on the scene in the early evening on December 1. The Yulan Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 4:53 p.m. for flooding conditions.

A temporary bridge had been installed across Beaver Brook while the Toaspern Pond Dam was being reconstructed and replaced as a requirement of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. The reconstruction doubles its span from 50 feet to 100 feet in length, widening the spillway beneath.

Board member Tom Migliorino told the River Reporter, “It didn’t turn out to be anything serious” and “everything is now fine.” Migliorino says there was no damage to any property or anyone injured.

He says it was a part of the dam that came down and caused a temporary rush of water. The board was scheduled to speak with the county and construction company on Monday, December 2 for more information.

According to a Yulan Fire Department, when they arrived, Highland Lake and Lumberland assembled for mutual aid.

The Sullivan County Department of Public Works foreman and the project engineer observed the water flow and determined that the permanent concrete dam was holding as designed, and the water flow was within designed parameters.
