Crime victims have rights too

In Wisconsin, we’ve taken an important step by adopting a crime victims’ rights constitutional amendment known as Marsy’s Law. But passing the amendment was only the first step in the process to help survivors. The rights provided by Marsy’s Law—including to be treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect—must be upheld in practice, not just on paper.

Too many victims still feel lost in the process. They wait for updates, face courtrooms where their voices are not always heard, and struggle to navigate a system that can feel overwhelming.

Marsy’s Law gives victims the right to be informed, to privacy, and to have a voice throughout the process, not just as case numbers. Those rights matter. And it’s up to all of us to help make sure they are consistently recognized and applied.

When we protect victims’ rights, we strengthen trust, promote healing, and help ensure that justice is truly just for everyone.
