Contribute coupons for ‘adopted’ overseas U.S. service members

NARROWSBURG, NY — Almost a decade ago, Fran Kirwin read an article in the Sunday Scranton Times about an overseas coupon program. Through www.ocpnet.org, Kirwin is able to collect coupons for an overseas U.S. base she “adopted.”

The beneficiary is a navy and marine base on the Mediterranean in Rota, Spain. When Kirwin receives coupons, she sorts them into categories and sends them once a month, which she reports on the website.

Each time she sends a shipment, she includes a seasonal greeting card and writes the names of those who contributed coupons.

“Two people who belong to the Red Hat chapter that I [am part of] give me coupons. Their names are Gale Reers and Jacqui Rutledge. I also am a member of the Tusten Seniors’ Club, where Mary and Darryl Hiller give me coupons,” she wrote in an email to TRR’s Eileen Hennessy. “Several other local people, including Beth Peck, Helene Indelicato, Mildred Muller, Dena Wagner and Fran Clemente [also donate coupons]. There are even friends in upstate New York who send me coupons.”

This year, with the help of her community, she has donated $90,000 worth of coupons and she hopes to reach $100,000 by the end of the year.

To help reach that goal, she invites the public to donate coupons. The coupons must be in the current month and must be manufacturer’s coupons, as they cannot use restaurant or store coupons overseas. It is requested that coupons are cut before donating.

Those who wish to help can leave coupons at the Tusten-Cochecton Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library or at Katie’s Café in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
