REGIONAL — Growing Older Together (GOT) is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that provides dues-paying members, aged 60 and older, both the practical means and the social connections to live independently in their homes. After a successful, three-month pilot program, teams from Community Vocational Services (CVS) have been added to the roster of screened and trained GOT volunteers who provide timely services for GOT members.

CVS volunteers are differently abled high school students and adults. Performing services for GOT members under the guidance of their coaches, CVS volunteers learn new job skills and gain valuable work experience that may eventually lead to paid employment in our community. Providing services also creates opportunities for social interactions and enhances interpersonal skills.

CVS Director and Certified Employment Support Professional Kim Emmet said, “The collaboration with GOT has been rewarding on both a professional and personal level.  During our first meeting we quickly realized the common gifts and challenges CVS folks share with GOT members. Our CVS volunteers are developing new skills as GOT members are sharing their wisdom and life experiences. It is truly a mutually beneficial relationship, and we appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the GOT community.”

Marcia Nehemiah, GOT Board President, said: “We are thrilled to welcome CVS to our growing family. From the beginning, GOT has had the goal of building solid community connections. We are especially excited about our collaboration with CVS because of the intergenerational connections that are being forged.”
