Comets nip ‘Dawgs’ 7-0

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — In the non-league boys’ varsity soccer match on September 9, between the home team Sullivan West Bulldogs (0-3) and the visiting Comets of Fallsburg (2-0), the Comets blanked the Dawgs 7-0, despite the best efforts of Will Nearing, Sullivan West’s ace goalie, who posted a whopping 22 saves in the game, fending off fast-and-furious shot after shot, as the visitors never took their feet off the gas.

The Comets scored three goals in the first frame: at 23 minutes into the match, by Christian Garcia; by Diego Bonilla at 25:00; and with four minutes remaining in the frame, Mauricio Ordonez beat the home team goalie at 36:00.

The final frame was all Fallsburg, as the Comets scored four goals. First one was Bonilla, assisted by Alex Dubon in the first minute; and then Bonilla earned himself a hat trick off an assist by Jose Perez at 12:00. He was followed by Dubon at 32:00, and to wrap up the 7-0 game, Ordonez scored on an assist from Bonilla at 33:00.

Going into the match, the Comets were coming off a 12-0 win over the Yellowjackets of Eldred.

Fallsburg takes to the field this season with a couple of seniors, Marcos Fuentes and Jose Perez; team captains are Diego Bonilla, a junior, and a pair of sophomores, Kevin Padilla and Mario Martinez.

The Fallsburg starting goalie is freshman Selvin Reyes.

The Comets’ boys’ varsity booters are coached by Dylan Gaucher, a relatively new addition to Fallsburg athletics. This is his inaugural year at the helm of the boys soccer team, after coaching baseball last spring.

Goals for 2022? “We’re hoping to make sectionals at the bare minimum,” Gaucher said. “I would really like to win sectionals… we’ll have to wait and see how our other teams are… we have a solid squad here, so I think a realistic goal is to win sectionals.”

Scott Scardino, Sullivan West’s assistant boys’ varsity soccer coach, was pinch-hitting for head coach Kristina Verrico, who is temporarily sidelined by an injury she sustained during practice.

Bulldog seniors are Will Nearing, Nate Mendoza, and Michael Schroder. The captains are Nearing and Mendoza.

In the loss to the Comets, Sullivan West’s Austin Nystrom posted his team’s only shot on goal, a stat that served to reinforce Fallsburg’s ability to dominate the game from the opening bell.

Scardino praised the soccer smarts of Nearing, the squad’s veteran goalie, who—for the record—posted 28 saves against Downsville the previous day at their soccer tournament.

“As a team captain, he’s one of the best on the team, a leader on and off the field, a great kid… He’s just phenomenal back there, a cornerstone,” said Scardino.

Goals and hopes? “We’re a young team, and we’re trying to focus on the fundamentals—how to play the game, how to get physical, how to be smart,” said Scardino. ”It’s going to be a learning season… we hope to make it to sectionals… four wins and we’re in, and we think we can do that.”
