Cochecton

Posted

Previous writings indicate that Cochecton was either the first or the second permanent settlement in Sullivan County. Today, it is the smallest town in the county, but filled with love from its residents.

As an artist, Amy Goff gets much of her inspiration from the river and its wild inhabitants. “I love the seasons here; I’m a big color person. That’s what you notice in my work, it’s not necessarily the subject matter, but the colors that I use. My favorite thing to paint is birds. I’ve learned a lot about them since moving here. I love tree frogs too, I keep hearing them lately.

“We love kayaking, that’s the biggest thing that attracts us to the river. Skinners Falls is absolutely one of our favorite spots. For years now, I’ve been taking my two girls.” Amy likes taking her dog to the Cochecton boat access to play fetch in the water.

“Getting to know so many people has even brought me work as an artist. It’s like having a second family here. Just being in this area, I’ve become so involved. It’s very community oriented. Everybody is so friendly. If something happens in the community, everyone’s emotionally supportive and chips in.”
