Chipmunk merriment

Posted

Spring is a great time of year to observe the activities of animals, birds and insects throughout the Upper Delaware River region. Hummingbirds arrived at my home on May Day, followed by catbirds, all joining the other common backyard birds already here. The eerie cries of our local fox can be heard threading through the darkened forest at night, likely putting the resident rabbits on alert that a predator is on the prowl.

Another of the energetic creatures out and about now is the Eastern chipmunk. Even when a chipmunk isn’t within sight, these small feisty members of the squirrel family can often be heard making their familiar loud “chipping call” in woodlands and forested backyards. Chipmunks also emit loud “chuck-chuck” sounds as a means of warning other animals away from their territories.

Chipmunks are admittedly adorable little critters with great spunk and fairly fearless spirits that combine for some highly entertaining antics. Try sitting outside surrounded by small piles of sunflower seeds placed on the ground around your feet. With a little patience and persistence, a chipmunk will soon accept your presence as positive.  If there is a child in your life, be sure to bring them along. This will prove a treat for you and the merry ‘munk that is your neighbor.
